We discovered the “Blinkwater trails” through the Amble booklet and had our first experience during the March long weekend. Besides losing the trail on occasion we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We saw reedbuck, countless birds and spoor, and even a Puff adder at close range. For hardened outdoor enthusiasts the “Blinkwater” is probably too close to civilization. The magnificent views overlook cultivated lands, sugar cane and gum plantations, settlements and Albert Falls dam. Part of the hike goes through plantations. But for those who do not want to travel too far, or want something challenging but not too strenuous and who enjoy the thought of comforts like hot water, snug cottages with indoor fireplaces and piles of firewood provided, it is easy to fall in love with the Blinkwater trail. We will be back in June when overnight hikes in the Berg are just too cold for people like us. The fireplaces at Iphasiwe and Douglas Smith huts are calling us back.
