The Faerie Glen Nature Reserve is located very centrally in the east of Pretoria (near Menlyn) and is very easily accessible, yet I have never thought to actually do the hike, due to what I have heard about people having been mugged there, etc.
We went there after work, at around 4 o’clock and had time to do quite a stretch of the trail (the park closes at six). It is not necessary to complete the total 10km, as there are a few routes that act as shortcuts through the park. We walked for approximately 1,5 hours and it was really enjoyable (also had an exciting river crossing and beautiful views across Pretoria!). Very pleased to see a number of other people using the park, particularly older people, which might prove the Reserve cannot be as unsafe as I expected. Also didn’t feel unsafe at any time during our walk (although I did leave my valuables in the car).
Entrance is a meagre R5, which I am happy to pay as it goes toward the upkeep and maintenance of the Reserve. The Faerie Glen Nature Reserve
is significant as it acts as one of the last refuges for Juliana’s Golden Mole (a critically endangered species). The vegetation is
typical Mountain Bushveld, with plenty of Aloes just starting to go into flowering season. Also noted a sign for an Environmental Process which is underway, which will provide for the improvement of the Reserve in terms of
access, infrastructure etc. Hoping the Plumbago tea garden will re-open!All in all, a relaxing and scenic walk! Might do the full route over the weekend.
