I did the Fish River hike in winter of 2004 (July). We had to undergo a medical check-up and needed a decent level of fitness. For good reason. The Visrivier hike is challenging even in the winter.

We were lucky, the river was in full stream and drink water was no problem. I heard of people who once had to drink water from barrels along the root.

The best part was the vivid night sky. Millions of stars and sleeping on the river sand, no tents required. In fact the stars were so bright, I needed to cover my eyes.

The German soldier’s grave is quite an interesting tale and may be visited en route. Photo over here http://www.flickr.com/photos/47076796@N07/4319537558/

The beauty of the fish river is difficult to describe. Just do it!
