  1. David on March 25, 2010

Spent the long weekend (20 – 22 March 2010) in Clarens and the Golden Gate National Park. On Sunday the weather was just perfect. Green fields with full sunshine and slight cool breeze. Just a couple of cotton white clouds drifting lazily high above our heads.

It’s a short trip from Clarens to the National Park, but SANParks have a number of campsites and hotels right inside the Park. The ‘Highlands Mountain Retreat’ being the most fantastic.

The ‘Golden Gate Highlights’ include the Echo Ravine, Boskloof, mushroom rock and Brandwag Buttress Walks, you pay a small reservation fee at the Glen Reenen Restcamp office which gives you access to the day trails and various road loops inside the park.

Starting at the Glen Reenen Restcamp you cross the river over a wooden bridge and you choose one of the out-and-return walks. All the walks are relatively easy but in order of difficulty I would rate them as follows (Mushroom Rock being the easiest):
    1. Brandwag Buttress
    2. Boskloof Walk
    3. Echo Ravine Walk
    4. Mushroom Rock Walk

The Echo Ravine and Brandwag Buttress was most rewarding. Incredible rock formations on Echo Ravine creates a tunnel effect, almost like a huge barrel of a wave. Since the day trails are easily accessible from the camp site you encounter quite a number of trailists, young and old.

The Brandwag Buttress is certainly worth the climb. The last bit has a metal chain railing to help you up the steepest bit. The view from above is stunning, with sweeping views accross the park including Mushroom Rock and surrounding Peaks.

We didn’t have time to complete the longer Wodehouse Walk, but next time we would probably want to tackle the overnight Rhebok Hiking trail.

Just hope the weather will be as good!
