When you follow the R21 towards Pretoria, take a short left at the Fountains Circle into Christina de Wit road, towards Centurion. A hop and a skip from the circle (approximately 500m) another short left and you arrive at the entrance to the Fountains Valley Resort. Following the winding road for a further 500m you arrive at the entrance of Africa’s oldest nature Reserve. Groenkloof Nature reserve. Proclaimed on 25 February 1895 by uncle Paul himself.

Groenkloof Nature Reserve is a sanctuary for the inhabitants of the Capital city. A mere 5km drive from the city centre and serenity engulfs you. Equipped with a water bottle a hat and sunscreen your ready to play Hansel and Gretel, with an option of three different hiking trails. For the timid hiker the white (4km) and red (3.5km) trails are recommended. These two trails are not straining at all and game viewing is splendid. On these routes, the aerie bat cave can be viewed and if your lucky the shy rock hyrax will also make an appearance. The more experienced and vigorous hiker can follow Dorothy’s yellow route of 10.5km. A circular route through lush valleys and rocky hill tops, providing an aerial view of the Capital city; UNISA, The Voortrekker Monument, Waterkloof Golf course and the CBD of Pretoria. The Fauna and Flora of this route is also spectacular, with Giraffe, Zebra, wildebeest and various antelope species to accompany you on your hike. Maps are available for self-guided hikes, but guided hikes can be proved if booked in advance.
