I’ve read about the Maltese Cross in a Go! Magazine a while ago and was determined to visit this interesting rock formation. Even though I thought it will be ‘cool’, nothing could have prepared me for sheer “incredibleness” of this magical natural art work work. It’s simply fantastic.

We stayed at the Algeria camp site in the Cederberg Wilderness Area, and took a relatively short drive (gravel road) to the Sanddrif /Dwarsrivier Farm. A small permit fee is payable at the reception and they explain the way to the start of the walk and where you may park your car.

The hike to the Maltese Cross is short but can be strenuous in the harsh summer sun, with little to no shade, and steep parts.

Be sure to take a water bottle and fill up on the delicious mountain stream water (got to be rated as the one of the best tasting water I’ve sampled on any hiking trail). Sunscreen and a good hat is a must.

The alien landscape is scattered with ‘weird’ rock formations and dotted with interesting fynbos flowers and plants.
Reptiles, strange looking insects and wild baboons are also around.
