My favourite route is up Diagonal and down Kasteels Poort. It has the most variety in its terrain and beautiful views of Camps bay. Once on the mountain you can take a stroll through "the valley of the red gods", what a poetic name for a marsh! During summer this side of the mountain is shaded in the mornings which make for a bearable climb on hot summers days.

In summer it is also good to climb up Skeleton Gorge and down Nursery Ravine, protected from the sun by trees. When doing this hike; check out the Hely Hutchinson dam which is a small diversion from the main track. It is an unbelievable sight a huge dam on a mountain, beach sand included!

I also enjoy India Venster. It is not as hard as it used to be; new chains and bolts have been added at the trickier sections. That being said it is "not a safe way down". The views are spectacular though.

Platteklip Gorge is the quickest, safest and most widely used way up the mountain; which is why I hate it. It feels like a highway and more seasoned and adventurous hikers should steer clear of this route.
